How to become a highly qualified Counselor Educator

The UCF Counselor Education Master's Program prepares individuals to work in different settings based upon the particular program tracks that they choose -- counselors and practitioners in institutions, schools, hospitals, community mental health settings, and private practice. UCF offers M.A. & M.Ed. Degrees in the School Counseling Track. The M.A. is for individuals who are not certified in education, and the M.Ed. is for individuals who have certification in education, have an M.A. in the Mental Health Counseling Track, or an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy. The certification and or licensure process is based on current laws and criteria for each program. There are also three graduate certificate areas of specialty that can be obtained in the Counselor Education Program: 1) Play Therapy; 2) Career Counseling; and 3) Marriage and Family. These certificate programs are for current counselor education students, or for counselors who are already working in the field and want to improve their knowledge and counseling skills.

The Play Therapy Certificate meets the requirements for national certification by the Association of Play Therapy. The Marriage and Family Certificate can be used to meet the state licensure requirements as a Marriage and Family Therapist. The career certificate offers specific knowledge and skills for individuals who work in career counseling. The Ph.D. in Education offers a counselor education track. It prepares counselors to work as highly qualified counselor educators in higher education, or supervisors in agencies or schools.
